School of Life Sciences — Citizenship Portfolio (SLS-CiPo)

The SLS-CiPo is designed to elevate students’ university experience by immersing them in life science activities that spark curiosity, nurture passion, and connect them with the scientific community. It aims to enhance student engagement across a variety of events and activities within the School of Life Sciences at CUHK, recognizing participation through a tiered award system.

Objectives
  • Boost student engagement in School of Life Sciences events.
  • Encourage exploration of diverse learning and research opportunities.
  • Recognize and reward participation with structured awards.
  • Enhance employability through reflective practice and portfolio development.
Activity Categories

SLS-CiPo activities are organized into three main categories to provide broad life sciences exposure:

  • SA: School-related Activities – Includes field trips and educational programs organized by SLS.
  • PA: Programme-related Activities – Activities specific to teaching programs such as career talks, academic advising, social gatherings, and site visits.
  • SS: SLS Scientific Seminars – Involves attending lectures, webinars, and research presentations hosted by SLS.
Tiered Award System

The portfolio employs a three-tier recognition system:

  • Tier 1: SLS Citizen – Entry-level recognition for participating in at least one event with 3 points in each activity category (total 9 points).
  • Tier 2: SLS Merit – Intermediate recognition requiring 6 points in each category (total 18 points).
  • Tier 3: SLS Winner – Highest recognition requiring 10 events attended and minimum points in each category (total 30 points).
Participation and Eligibility
  • Only Year 1 students in the Faculty of Science are eligible.
  • Students must declare an SLS major by Phase II to qualify for awards.
  • Participation tracked through an online portal where students sign up and submit records.
Employability Benefits
  • Reflective practices, resume building, and portfolio development support students’ professional profiles.
  • Activities prepare students for careers in life sciences and further studies.
Study Programmes under SLS

Study schemes offered include Biochemistry, Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Food and Nutritional Sciences, and Molecular Biotechnology. Each programme has unique curriculum highlights and career prospects emphasizing scientific and experiential learning.
